He scared because he cared…

I woke up early this morning with the intention of wrapping up the second blog on insurance coverages. However, a change in course tugged at me.

Readers continue to share with me what they would take with them if their home was on fire. This conversation continues to surprise me. The thought of taking anything with me, other than my children and husband, does not enter my mind. If animals were standing in front of me, I would grab them, also. However, if my pets were not in front of me, I would not go looking for them. The grief caused by leaving an animal behind is an overwhelming emotion. Why would I not look for them? Training. Years and years of training from a man with a lot of fire experience and wisdom. Growing up the child of a Cleveland Firefighter, I wondered every 24-hour shift whether or not my dad would come home the next day. We all slept with our bedroom doors shut, and for emphasis and in making sure I heard him, I endured the booming voice (okay, let’s face it, he scared because he cared) explaining that I will never, ever, understand how fast fire moves. His words still resonate in my ears, JUST GET OUT. His words sunk in over time. I have read predictions that a person has as few as two minutes to leave a burning home. JUST GET OUT. DON’T go back in. As an adult and reflecting back in time, I wonder now if his impassioned pleas to us came after a horrible day on the job. A very heartbreaking thought.

Learn about fire safety, sleep with your bedroom door shut, make a plan with your family, know that everything is replaceable, except for you and your family. JUST GET OUT.
